What is SEO? Do I need it? How do I get it? So what is this SEO 'buzz'.

Simply, SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation. Not everyone knows where your website is so they search via a search engine – like Google as an example to find you. Here's the thing, if you don't have the words that the person used in the search then chances are… you most probably won't be on the list…

So basically SEO is ensuring that your website can be found by search engines for specific keywords or phrases which are relevant to the terms being searched.
That’s the basic principal – Google does not really understand amazing design or great images, they do however understand words.
But here’s the second thing – if it was just words that made you rank well with Google then of course you could plaster thousands of keywords on your website and you’d be a star.
You wouldn’t have to worry about pesky sentences, just type the keyword, copy and paste it, repeat 100 times and done.

Google however is a bit brighter than that.
You might have heard of the infamous Google algorithm.
The algorithm (at a high level) is the mathematical formula the Google uses to decide who gets on the front page of a search and who ends up on page 87.
No one other than Google knows the exact algorithm but they do let us know a few things that are going to help.

So here’s 5 things you can do straight away to improve your SEO performance.

Keywords
Check the content on your website, the words – do you have the words that a potential customer would use to find you?
Often people in an industry get a bit of tunnel vision and forget the everyday language that people use to define their products and services.
Chat to your customers… you might be very surprised. And when you do get some new keywords – make sure they are on your site.
Think local
Here’s a tip, if you sell products and services to say… Melbourne Eastern Suburbs you might want to mention that.
You might want to also mention specific suburbs. Did you know that when most people are searching for a plumber they type into Google ‘plumber knoxfield’ as an example.
So if you’re a plumber you might want to have ‘plumber’ and ‘knoxfield’ somewhere on your website.
Which leads us to…

You need to create constant content
For most people - they know that they should be creating content for their website but… just don’t do it for whatever excuse they can find.
I’m busy, it’s too hard, I don’t know what to say… cool, so don’t expect to magically appear on the frontpage of Google.
There is a very simple strategy that we use with our clients that works a treat for creating content but it does require some tools, a bit of work and most importantly ‘discipline’.
Here’s the tools for this specific example. You need WordPress (we just recommend WordPress but other CMS systems often have this capability), A ‘smart’ phone and a specific application on your smart phone that will allow you to update your website.
The process is; you go to a job, you take a picture on your smart phone, you then open your smart phone WordPress app, select the image you’ve just taken and add a sentence that is keyword rich such as “another very happy customer in knoxfield”, “very happy with the plumbing”, “great job and at a great price” and that’s it. The News section of your website has an update, done – Google’s happy. Google wants you to update your website.

Go Social
Have business accounts with Facebook, Google +, Twitter, Linkedin and YouTube at the very least.
Make sure those links are on your website, make sure you update the various Social Media platforms with some content from time to time – and watch what happens on Google search.
On another note – if you are in business and you haven’t gone ‘social’ then possibly one day, you may not be in business (of course depending what business you are in but hey – you get the drift).

Analyse
Google Analytics is your best friend. If you got a website – Google Analytics will tell you exactly what’s going on.
Take the time, create a monthly report and analyse the report as it comes through each month.
Things of interests besides simple metrics like hits are things like - where do the people that visit your website come from?
Did they do a Google search? if so what was the keyword that they used to find you? Is there someone out there linking to you (if you are not aware links to you and from your website are still very very handy to have).
Google Analytics gives you the ability to set targets, put plans into motion and measure the results. Do it.
